Ask A Question on the daf

Previous daf

Yevamos 71

1) [line 1] HAMARAS DAS - (a) change of religion, apostasy; (b) one who worships a foreign god (RAMBAM Korban Pesach 9:7)

2) [line 26] GIV'ONI MAHUL - the name of a nation that practices circumcision (some editions have the Girsa "*GIVNONI* MAHUL." Note: the Gemara is referring to Nochrim, and not to the Giv'onim who became known as Nesinim, who converted to Judaism.)

*3*) [line 28] V'ASUR B'MULEI OVDEI KOCHAVIM - (The reason that a Neder not to benefit from "Arelim" prohibits one to derive benefit from circumcised Nochrim is not just because *people* call circumcised Nochrim "Arelim." It is because the *Torah* refers to them as "Arelim" -- TOSFOS and Rishonim. On the other hand, the reason the Neder does not prohibit him to derive benefit from uncircumcised Jews is not because the *Torah* calls them "Mulim." To the contrary, the Torah calls them "Arelim" and prohibits them to eat Terumah. Rather, it is because *people* call them "Mulim," as RASHI (DH b'Arlei) explains.)

4) [line 32] L'HATIF - (lit. to cause to drip or flow) to extract blood from the place of the Milah

Every word in the Torah is holy and contains worlds of insights and nuances. However, certain sages of the Mishnah felt that there were some phrases recorded in the Torah that paralleled people's speech, and should not be used for homiletics or insights.

6) [line 39] ARELUS SHE'LO BI'ZEMANAH ME'AKVA O LO ME'AKVA? - Does having a foreskin before eight days have elapsed, i.e. before there is a Mitzvah of Milah, prevent one from eating Terumah?

7a) [line 41] SHE'AS ASIYAH - the time that the Korban Pesach is slaughtered (from after Chatzos on the fourteenth of Nisan, and before nightfall of the fifteenth)
b) [line 41] SHE'AS ACHILAH - the time that the Korban Pesach is eaten (the night of the fifteenth of Nisan)

8) [line 50] CHALATZTO CHAMAH - his fever left him
9) [last line] V'NIMHALEI MI'TZAFRA? - If so, then the newborn boy should be circumcised in the morning!?

10) [line 1] LUDA'AH - "the Lydian", the name of an Amora. Lydia is a district of Asia Minor

11) [line 1] YOM HAVRA'ASO - the day that a newborn boy recovers [and is well enough to be circumcised]

12) [line 7] ISPACH - and he was cured (his eye healed)
13) [line 8] CHAVUSHIN - imprisoned
14) [line 10] TUMTUM - a person whose genitals are hidden so that we do not know if he is a male or a female

15) [line 11] KEGON SHE'HOTZI ROSHO CHUTZ LA'PEROZDOR - in a case where the newborn's head emerged [and remained in that position for eight days]

16) [line 13] NIFTACH HE'SASUM, V'NISTAM HA'PASU'ACH - the [mouth that has been previously] sealed opens, and the [umbilical chord that has been previously] open closes

17) [line 15] ZANSEI EISHATA - a fever sustained him (eliminating his need to eat)
18) [line 18] HEICHA D'LO ME'AVEI - where the baby does not cry, which presents the problem that (a) (O.F. alener) he is having trouble breathing (RASHI SHABBOS 134); (b) he cannot exhale from his nose (ARUCH)

19) [line 20] AREL MEKABEL HAZA'AH - the ashes of the Parah Adumah may be sprinkled on a person who is uncircumcised and this effects purification from Tum'as Mes

20) [line 20] HAZA'AH
If a person (or utensil) became Tamei through touching a Mes, he must wait seven days to become Tahor. On the third and seventh days he must have spring water mixed with the ashes of the Parah Adumah (Mei Chatas) sprinkled on him. A person who is Tahor dips three Ezov branches that have been bound together into the mixture, and sprinkles them on the person who is Tamei. On the seventh day, he immerses in a Mikvah after the mixture is sprinkled on him in order to complete his Taharah. (Bamidbar 19:17-19)

21) [line 23] CHULSHA D'ORCHA - weariness from the journey
22) [line 30] PERI'AS MILAH -peeling off the layer of skin that covers the tip of the Ever after the circumcision

23) [line 32] CHAREVOS TZURIM - sharp knives
24) [line 37] TZITZIN HA'ME'AKVIN ES HA'MILAH - small strips of the foreskin that invalidate circumcision

25) [line 38] HA'CHOFEH ES ROV HA'ATARAH - that covers most of the Atarah, (lit. the crown) the raised part of the Ever that is under the Orlah. See Insights to Shabbos 137:3.
