Chulin 96

CHULIN 96-98 - Sponsored by a generous grant from an anonymous donor. Kollel Iyun Hadaf is indebted to him for his encouragement and support and prays that Hashem will repay him in kind.

*****************************GIRSA SECTION*****************************
We recommend using the textual changes suggested by the Bach and the
marginal notes of the Vilna Shas. This section is devoted to any *OTHER*
important corrections that Acharonim have pointed out in the Gemara, Rashi
and Tosfos

[1] Tosfos 96a DH Tzarich should come before DH mi'Chelal

[2] Rashi 96b DH k'Vasar b'Lefes:
The word "*d'Af* Al Pi"
should be "*v'Af* Al Pi"

[3] Tosfos 96b DH Afilu:
The words "d'Chen *Derech*"
should be "d'Chen *ha'Derech*"

[4] Ibid:
The words "b'Chol ha'Chatichah"
should be "b'Chol ha'Chatichos" (RASHASH)

1) [line 5] TEVI'US EINA D'KALA - identification of a person from his or her voice
2) [line 7] (B'TREI) [BEI TREI] - two witnesses
3) [line 8] D'HAI SIMANEI V'HAI SIMANEI - that this is one of his identifying features and this is another of his identifying features

4) [line 11] KARYEI L'PLANYA - (lit. call so-and-so) invite so-and-so
5) [line 16] KEDEI LEKAYEIM BO MITZVAS NETILAH - (lit. in order to fulfill the Mitzvah of removing [the Gid ha'Nasheh]) pulling out the Gid ha'Nasheh without performing Chatitah, rooting out all of the branches of the Gid ha'Nasheh

6) [line 18] MI'ZEH K'ZAYIS UMI'ZEH K'ZAYIS - a k'Zayis of the Gid ha'Nasheh from one leg and a k'Zayis of the Gid ha'Nasheh from the other leg (of the same animal)

7) [line 21] MENAKER - deveining, removing the Gid ha'Nasheh and the prohibited (mid'Rabanan) fat surrounding it. A "Menaker" is a person who has learned how to perform "Nikur," deveining

8) [line 21] ATMA - the thigh of a slaughtered animal
9) [line 21] HAVAH KA GA'IM LEI - he was peeling it off (without performing Chatitah)
10) [line 22] CHUS BEI TEFEI - (lit. go down more into it) perform Chatitah on it
11) [line 23] IRTAS - he trembled
12) [line 24] D'OREI LACH, K'REBBI YEHUDAH OREI LACH - those who taught you [the Halachos of Nikur] taught you according to the opinion of Rebbi Yehudah

13) [line 30] HA'KAF - the meaty protuberance, cap of the hip-bone

14) [line 32] BIRYAH
(a) A "Biryah" literally means an independent, living creature (such as an ant, as in Makos 16b) that is considered significant in itself and needs no minimum Shi'ur to make it significant. (See Insights #2, for a list of the conditions which must be met in order for an object to be classified as a Biryah.)
(b) Usually, a person does not receive Malkus for transgressing the prohibition of eating forbidden foods unless he eats a k'Zayis. A person who eats a prohibited Biryah, however, receives Malkus even though the Biryah is smaller than a k'Zayis.
(c) Although by Torah Law, a Biryah is Batel b'Shishim (becomes nullified if the other food is sixty times greater in volume) when it is mixed with other foods, the Chachamim decreed that a Biryah does not become Batel even if the other food is 1,000 times greater in volume than it.

15) [line 11] B'NOSEN TA'AM
See Background to Chulin 89:38.

16) [line 13] B'LEFES - (that is cooked) with turnips
